“Inhalable particles, PM10, are microscopic particles. PM10 stands for ‘particulate matter 10’ and indicates the mass of particles with a diameter of less than 10 micrometres (millionth of a meter). These particles can be inhaled and the smallest ones can get down into the lungs.” (Swedish Transport Administration) In the framework of air quality problems, particulate matter is the most important.

PM 10 are very small particles found in dust and smoke. They have a diameter of 10 micrometres (0.01 mm) or smaller. PM 10 particles are a common air pollutant. We measure PM 10 at some of our air monitoring sites.

Ambient outdoor samplers for PM10. PM is classified by size, not by what it’s made up of. For example, when you read that PM10 is high today in Los Angeles, the number 10 actually refers to the diameter of the dust being measured. In this case the PM10 means that the dust measures less than 10 micrometers.

Because the PM2.5 travels deeper into the lungs AND because the PM2.5 is made up things that are more toxic (like heavy metals and cancer causing organic compounds), PM2.5 can have worse health effects than the bigger PM10. Total emissions of primary sub-10µm particulate matter (PM 10 ) have reduced by 24% across the EEA-33 region between 1990 and 2011, driven by a 35% reduction in emissions of the fine particulate matter (PM 2.5 ) fraction. Emissions of particulates between 2.5 and 10 µm have reduced by 12% over the same period; the difference of this trend to that of PM 2.5 is due to significantly increased [BY 휴머니스트] 2017년 12월 30일, 수도권 미세먼지 비상저감조치가 처음으로 발령되었다. 2018년 4월 The Portable PM10 / PM2.5 Monitor is also compatible with the full range of Aeroqual gas sensors: Ammonia Sensor 0-1000ppm.

These smaller particles include combustion particles, organic compounds and metals. PM10 is just a form of air pollution composed of tiny particles, right?

Fine (smaller) particles, called PM 2.5, are more dangerous because they can get into the deep parts of your lungs — or even into your blood.

We got a very good and relevant question this week from Severine P., who asked about pm2.5 concentrations versus pm10 concentrations. What Severine asked in her mail was: I don't understand why pm2.5 concentrations are often higher than pm10 concentrations. Aren't PM smaller than 2.5 micro included in PM smaller than 10 micro?

In order for us to see something as incredibly small as a micrometre, we need to use powerful microscopes. PM10 is a mixture of particles suspended in the air that do not exceed 10 micrograms in diameter.
